God is my Fortress Psalm 18:2 Lesson Idea

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. Psalm 18:2

                                                                           For Children 2-5 Years old

This week for our toddlers we’re learning that God is our Fortress. In today’s world it’s hard to understand the importance of a fortress or a strong Castle when in trouble. In times past a fortress was a defense against invaders and attacks from the enemy. A strong tower was a shelter, comfort and safety and people often didn’t fear when within its walls. Even a strong violent storm didn’t seem as violent when hidden in a Castle on a strong mountain. So when teaching this class it’s important to establish an understanding of what a fortress is!
For my lesson I purchased a small Castle at my local Craft store ($15) that I have ready to show the kids. I also purchased a castle backdrop at my local party supply store that I hung on the wall.
Here in California it’s been raining very strong. So I begin by asking the kids how many of you got wet when you were on the way to church? How about last night when you were sleeping? Most of us could hear the rain from a nearby window while you slept but we didn’t get wet! Why is that? Because we were safe in our home; even though we could hear the wind blowing and rain pouring down we felt safe because we’re inside our homes. The walls and roof blocked everything and we’re safe inside.
Well that’s what Jesus does for us! He keeps us safe from any danger like a strong Castle (fortress). Because I don’t want to plant a seed of fear of thieves coming in the night or to their homes I chose a less fearful image.
Image you live in this castle a its raining outside do you have to be afraid? No because you’re safe inside.(here I sprayed the kids with some water from a small water pump causing a mist)  What about if you can hear the wind blowing really hard, do you have to be afraid? no because your safe inside.(here I fanned the kids with a large cardboard) What if you would see an animal outside would you be afraid? No because you’re safe inside.  (Here I had a small lion and a small Dinosaur in comparison to the castle).
Well when we have Jesus in our hearts he puts us in a strong castle (fortress) around us and even though things happen around us we don’t have to be afraid because we can trust in Him and He’ll keep us safe for any harm.
Here I have the kids put their little heads down and say a prayer accepting Jesus in their hearts.
To finish the lesson I had the kids do a fun craft.
I printed a Castle on a foam sheet from my local dollar store (you can stick the foam sheet one at a time and they will print from a home printer). The foam sheets come in different colors so they had plenty to choose from I then cut them out so only the Castle remained. I then gave the kids a choice of two Dinos that they could add to their scene and gave them sequence and jewels to design their castle.
